EAST LANSING (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder's speech at Michigan State University's commencement ceremonies has generated some backlash following a whirlwind week in state government.

The Detroit Free Press and MLive reported Saturday that about 200 protesters gathered outside as the Republican governor spoke. The Lansing State Journal estimates there were about 100 demonstrators.

The Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature used a marathon session that ended Friday morning to send dozens of bills to Snyder's desk, capping a busy week in which Michigan became the 24th right-to-work state.

Action on right-to-work sparked the most heated protests and vocal opposition from Democrats. Snyder signed the bills Tuesday. The measures limit unions' power.

Snyder, a University of Michigan graduate, steered clear of politics in his speech. He was greeted with some boos inside but also applause.
