MT. PLEASANT -- He's served as Secretary of State, our national security advisor and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Central Michigan University hosted retired General Colin Powell Thursday evening as part of the university’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration week.

Powell discussed the attributes of leadership during his speech called "Taking Charge."  He gave a nod to CMU’s ROTC students, mentioning he was the first ROTC graduate to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In his speech, Powell said America is still the land of opportunity and hope, quoting some of our founding fathers' famous words, including those of Thomas Jefferson.

"The clothes that fit the boy can't be expected to fit the man, meaning we have to grow, we have to change, as our nation grows and changes,” Powell said.

Nearly 5,000 people heard Powell speak.

The event at McGuirk Arena was sold out.
