Others find their own ways to beat the heat

GENESEE COUNTY -- Some Montrose-area residents faced a hot day without electrical service to power air conditioners or fans.

Consumers Energy tells NBC25 that 3,400 customers lost power in the Montrose area, about 70 miles northwest of Detroit, after a substation failure Tuesday night.  The cause of the failure wasn't known. The CMS Energy Corp. unit was encouraging people - especially the elderly and children - to seek shelter Wednesday at cooling stations.

Andrea's Place in Montrose was still without power when we visited early this afternoon.  Owner Andrea Shaw was doing one last haircut and decided to close down for the day.

"It's a hot day....I told the girls to take the day off enjoy it and have fun," said Shaw.

The Detroit Free Press reports an underground cable failure on Wednesday morning left about 4,000 DTE Energy Co. customers without power in the Detroit suburb of Berkley.

Flint resident Jim Frost took his family to Holloway Reservoir to escape the heat.

"We've been out camping for a couple weeks," said Frost, "we were home for a day it got hot and I'm like... let's go back to the lake!"

Today is the first official day of summer.
