FLINT -- The search is on to fill Delrico Loyd's recently-vacated seat on the Flint City Council, after the councilman stepped down, citing personal and professional reasons.

Six candidates attended a public forum tonight at the Hasselbring Community Center to talk to residents about why they want to serve on the 1st Ward council seat.  Tyrone Croom, Leon El-Amin, Jacqueline Jordan, Eric Mays Harry Ryan and Venita Simmons Washington attended the forum.

The city council has until December 15 to appoint someone to serve out the rest of Loyd's term, which expires Nov. 5, 2013.

Flint resident Michael Harris organized the forum.  He said even though the public doesn't get an official say, residents should be involved in the process.

“There are some limitations but even when it comes to helping individuals, city residents deal with potholes to water bills, they want to have someone downtown who they can count on to represent them.  I think that's important,” Harris said.

Interested candidates can apply for consideration until this Friday, Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.  They can send a resume and cover letter to the city clerk’s office:

Inez M. Brown

City Clerk

City Hall

1101 S. Saginaw St.

Flint, MI 48502

Council members will begin interviewing candidates next week and will likely appoint someone at their next council meeting on Monday, December 10.
