LANSING (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed a moment of silence Friday morning in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Snyder says the observance at 9:30 a.m. honors a request to governors nationwide from Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Snyder says the "tragedy in Newtown has left a mark of sadness in the heart of every American" and says his "thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the parents, families, friends and community members" affected by the killings.

Snyder says he and Malloy have also asked places of worship and government buildings with the ability to do so to ring bells 26 times during this moment to honor the children and educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.
