GAYLORD -- The Midwest's first winter storm has dumped up to 9.3 inches of an expected 14 inches of snow in northern Michigan and has knocked out power to at least 50,000 state electricity customers.
The National Weather Service says the snow that started falling Thursday morning had reached 9.3 inches in Otsego County in the northern Lower Peninsula and 9 inches near Stephenson in the Upper Peninsula's Menominee County by 7:30 p.m.
Marquette County reports 8.5 inches the central Upper Peninsula. Southern Michigan has received rain and snow.
CMS Energy Corp. says at 50,000 customers have lost power, and 35,000 remained powerless Thursday afternoon.
The weather service says snowfall totals could reach 13 inches in upper Michigan and 14 inches in northern lower Michigan before the storm exits Michigan on Friday.
