SAGINAW -- Students at Ferris State University did their part to clean up the community on Saturday.

The first ever "Kick Butt" campaign began at Olson Park in Saginaw as students are pushing for smoke-free parks.

Students cleaned up litter at four different parks in the area but paid special attention to discarded cigarette butts.

The students plan on bringing the trash to the township council meeting on Monday to show community leaders that there is a problem.

"Not only do we want smoke free parks but people need to dispose of their cigarette butts because when you drop them in a park, the next thing you know a one-year-old girl has it in their mouth eating a cigarette butt," said Ferris State student Heather Beckman.

The students plan to kick the butts again this summer.
