DETROIT -- A massive pileup involving more than a dozen cars has closed portions of I-75 in Detroit.

The MIchigan State Police say at least 4 are dead, 3 of them children, and more than 20 people are hurt.

The crash is more than a mile long with as many as 200 cars involved.

The northbound lanes are closed at Schaefer and the southbound lanes are closed at Springwells.

WDIV in Detroit spoke with several drivers at the scene who were able to get out of their cars safely and get off the interstate.

The drivers told WDIV that white-out weather conditions made it very hard to see and contributed to the chain-reaction crash.

Several drivers tried to help others who were stuck in their cars before rescue crews got on the scene.

Witnesses told WDIV that some cars were "crushed like accordions."
