FLINT -- Several fire companies have been called to a structure fire at  the America Inn Hotel at 2701 South Dort Highway in Flint.

The call came in around 10:30 Saturday night. As of midnight Sunday, the Grand Blanc, Burton and Swartz Creek fire companies were called in for mutual aid.

Today residents are reeling, one by one returning to where some of them called home to find a note on the window left by motel management, saying they are not responsible for any lost items due to the fire.

Less than 24 hours ago witnesses say this entire side of the complex was engulfed with fire and smoke so thick they couldn't see 25 feet infront of them.

The American Red Cross responded last night with a bus taking residents at the scene to the Baymont Inn of Pierson Road and housing them for today and tonight. The red Cross says resident whowere not at the scene are not getting assistance.

The Flint Fire Department says freezing temperatures, the fire having a head start and the nearest working hydrant a half mile away made fighting the fire difficult.

Family of residents returning today are finding a lack of cooperation hard to believe.

"There is no one who is trying to find out why they are not being responsible for their items that were lost," said Twanette Coleman.

The American In mamagement declined to comment about a lack of cooperation and how insurance is playing into the situation. Baymont Inn says about 7 residents are housed there in the fires aftermath.
