SAGINAW -- "We need it to be as realistic as possible because we want the faculty to know, should there be an emergency what to expect," said Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel.

Davenport University feels the training is essential to keep staff and students safe.

“Well there has been a lot of what we call active shooters throughout college universities throughout the United States. And because of these events we want to make sure that our students are prepared if something like this were to happen, said VP of Risk Management Duane Terestra."

Sheriff Federspiel says things have changed since events like Columbine and Virginia Tech.

"After that we had to change our tactics and say if I am the first one to a critical incident, Sheriff or no Sheriff, take these stars off I'm going in. And you have to go in and put a stop to that threat, said Federspiel."

Members of Davenport University went through a class prior to the shooter exercise teaching them a few important steps that could save lives.

“How to respond, where to go when there is an issue like this that takes place. How faculty should handle their students in the classroom and what staff should do if their in an office, how to block doors and things of that nature, said Terestra."
