SAGINAW -- Upcoming layoffs are forcing the Saginaw Fire Department to make more cuts.  The fire department says with fewer firemen, less space is needed to house them.

Assistant city manager Phil Ludos says the city is looking at losing two fire stations. After the July first layoffs are made the department is likely to keep the central station on federal and one of the two stations on the cities west side.

Though no final decision has been made about their closures fire union president Thomas Raines says it will impact response times in the city.

The National Fire Protection Association requires that in an urban area with more than 1000 people in a square mile fire department staffing must be at least 15 people with a 9 minute response time 90 percent of the time.
