LANSING (AP) -- A hot line for Michigan smokers who want to quit is not working because of a high volume of calls.
The Michigan Department of Community Health said Thursday morning it is working on the problem. An alternative number is working but could come with delays depending on call volumes.
The alternative Michigan Tobacco Quit Line number is 1-800-480-7848.
Smokers can get free nicotine patches, gum or lozenges from the state to help them quit smoking or chewing tobacco.
The state is offering up to an eight-week supply of the products through April 30 or while supplies last for people who agree to get help in their effort to quit smoking.
The main number not working Thursday morning is 1-800-784-8669 or 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
