(AP) -- ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Zoo is helping Texas officials care for more than 27,000 animals confiscated from an international exotic animals dealer. The zoo says in a news release that six animal curators and supervisors have spent the past four weeks working with rescuers at a temporary facility in Dallas.
Arlington, Texas authorities raided U.S. Global Exotics on Dec. 15. A judge ruled last week that the animals were living in cruel conditions, were denied necessary veterinary care, and should not be returned to U.S. Global Exotics.
If the ruling stands, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Texas will seek permanent homes for the animals in zoos and sanctuaries. The Detroit Zoo has offered to take in several mammals and hundreds of reptiles, spiders and amphibians.
