(AP) -- The Detroit Zoo has been recognized as "StormReady" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service. The zoo in Royal Oak, north of Detroit, will receive its certification during a ceremony Friday.
StormReady preparedness helps communities across the country with communication and safety skills needed when flooding or severe weather hits an area. The program was started in 1999 and is designed to save lives and property.
The National Weather Service lists 1,693 sites under the program. The number includes community, government, universities and commercial sites.
Michigan has 34 StormReady sites. The Detroit Zoo is one of four commercial sites in the state.
