New incentives may be down the road for people looking to buy electric vehicles.
Monday, Senator Debbie Stabenow proposed a bill that would give battery-powered car buyers an instant $7500 credit. Right now, customers can get that credit at the end of the year, but Stabenow thinks giving the discount at the dealership will encourage more people to buy.
The senator also wants to give tax credits to create more recharging stations in Michigan, and wants to reward businesses that buy hybrid trucks.
In a phone conference Monday, she stated that other countries are on the heels of Michigan when it comes to advanced battery and electric vehicle technology. She says in order to “out-compete, we have to out-innovate.” One way she proposes to do this, is to give these tax breaks to potential vehicle purchasers.
