Michigan lawmakers battle over "partial birth abortion" law.
The battle over the “partial-birth abortion” law is picking back up in Michigan.
Tuesday, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would ban the procedure that is done during late term pregnancy. The bill now goes to the Senate.
The controversial topic has evoked emotional and political responses from both Democratic and Republican leaders.
In 2008, then governor, Jennifer Granholm, voted the law down because it didn’t take a mother’s health into consideration. Planned Parenthood also argues that laws such as this neglect to make room for incidents that could place the mother’s life and/or health at risk.
Right to Life of Michigan has since taken up the issue, and is backing state leaders such as Rep. Kevin Daly and Rep. Ben Glardon who are working to push the ban through. This organization states, “a state ban on partial birth abortion would give Michigan's attorney general and each of the county prosecutors the authority to prosecute abortion doctors who perform this barbaric procedure. This would allow many more potential law enforcement resources to be used to prosecute those who violate the law.”
