A report from the Michigan Automobile Association says more than 95% of bicycle deaths result from crashes with motor vehicles. With summer in full swing and more bicyclists sharing the roads with drivers, there are simple safety measures to take to keep everyone safe.
Local bike enthusiasts say using the proper riding equipment is crucial in preventing accidents.
Vincent Cirillo works at Bicycle Village in Saginaw, and says that bikers need to make sure they use equipment to make themselves more visible to motorists, especially at night.
"Reflectors on a bike for night riding, also a light kit. Reflective clothing too like a reflective vest, something that's highly visible very helpful there," says Cirillo.
Cirillo says many drivers simply don’t see a bicyclist in their path until it’s too late, and drivers have an equal responsibility in staying alert on the roads.
"People riding will tell you, man I swore the driver looked right at me but still they run into the car or the car runs into them," says Cirillo.
Kurt Schewanncke participates in Pedal Across Lower Michigan, or PALM. He says it’s important for bicyclists to follow certain rules when sharing the road with motor vehicles.
"Make sure you ride no more than two by two. When you're passing, it’s always on the left, and ride on the side of the road," says Schewanncke.
He says street signs aren’t meant just for motorists.
"Bikers observe all the road signs just like cars do," says Schewanncke.
The Department of State is urging drivers to be especially mindful of children on bicycles, as nearly 20% of bicyclists injured by motor vehicles last year were under the age of 14.
