Surveillance video to be released soon
FLINT -- A teenage mother of a 5 month old girl is dead after a hit and run incident early Sunday morning in Genesee Township. 17 year old Kadijah Powell was walking home from a party at Skateland when she was struck and killed by what police describe as an “SUV with front end damage”. Detectives say they have obtained surveillance video of the vehicle and may release it later in the week. They are also working with local auto dealerships to determine the exact make and model of the vehicle and expect to have that information soon.
Police also say there were several eyewitnesses to the incident, which occurred sometime after 4am near the corner of Coldwater Rd. and Dort Highway. The surveillance video obtained is from 3 separate area businesses, and they expect they will soon be able to locate the person responsible if they don't turn themselves in first.
Kadijah’s mother, Lynette Powell of Flint is taking care of her 5 month old granddaughter. She says the baby misses her mother and whomever is responsible, accident or not, should turn themselves in. “They should just turn themselves in and deal with the consequences,” she said. “My daughter is dead”.
She says a friend pulled her out of the street while other supposed friends abandoned the scene, when she got the call from the friend, her daughter was already dead. "He stayed there and pulled her out of the street," the grieving mother said, "said the car hit her so hard it knocked the socks off her feet."
Powell says her daughter Kadijah was working on completing her education and applying for jobs. She was concerned about her baby's future. "She liked to read...she was just reading and writing allot and stuff. She was a sweet little kid who loved her baby."
There is a fund set up to help pay for funeral expenses. The Kadijah Powell Memorial Fund is set up at Citizen’s Bank. If you have any information about the hit and run driver that killed Kadijah Powell, contact Genesee Township police.
