One person has died, and dozens have been sickened by salmonella poisoning from ground turkey meat.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports ten people in Michigan have been sickened by the tainted turkey meat, and a total of 77 people across the nation.
The illness first came to light around March 9, 2011. The CDC website reports four retail locations have been identified as selling the contaminated meat, however investigators are still working to track the exact source of the products.
The USDA-FSIS has released a public health alert for frozen or fresh ground turkey products, reminding consumers to cook all meat thoroughly before eating. All turkey meat should reach 165 degrees internally before serving.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. If you have eaten any ground turkey meat recently, and are experiencing these symptoms, call your doctor.
