BAY CITY -- In January 2009, a 93-year-old man was found frozen to death in his Bay City home after the electrical company turned off his power for not paying his bills. Now, two years later, a Mid-Michigan hospital has received money from a settlement in that case.
Residents were outraged when NBC25 first brought you the story of Marvin Schur, the elderly man who died alone in his home one wintry day.
The story received national attention, as blame was passed between the family members who allegedly neglected to check up on the man and Bay City Electric Light & Power, the electrical company that shut off his power in the middle of one of the coldest months of the year.
Now, several years later, a settlement has been reached in Schur’s death.
Just before Schur passed away, he had a will created that left most of his money to Bay Regional Medical Center. According to the Associated Press, a judge has now issued a $323,000 settlement in the elderly man’s death, and ruled that because of the will, the vast majority of that money will go to the medical center. The AP reports six of his family members will each receive $6,000 and the law firm representing the family will get about $187,000.
