Richard Short has been sentenced to up to 8 years in prison for fraud.
FLINT -- Richard Short, the man who conned the State of Michigan out of a $9.1 million tax credit, has been sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
In July, Short pleaded no contest to “Attempt False Pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000.” Prosecutor David Leyton said Short after receiving the credit from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in order to “create jobs” in Flint. He also pleaded no contest for allegedly using his 87-year-old neighbor’s ATM card. The woman had dementia, and it appears he’d used her ATM for his own use.
Genesee County Circuit Judge Joseph Farah sentenced him to 20 months to eight years in prison.
“I feel that justice has been served, and this was the proper resolution of this matter,” Prosecutor David Leyton said. “Richard Short is a serial con man. [Tuesday's] sentence will take him off our streets and protect the public from the possibility of more schemes and scams by this con artist. It was a complicated case in many ways and involved a large amount of financial records and countless other documents. The end result is that Richard Short is on his way to prison and we were able to obtain justice for his elderly neighbor who is now deceased."
