As you’re gathering in the kitchen to prepare holiday feasts this season, it is important to be aware of safety tips in order to prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

The Saginaw County Department of Public Health offers the following tips to ensure all food remains safe:

  1. Wash your hands before handing any food, often during the cooking process, and after you have finished cooking.
  2. Use a food thermometer and read all package directions to ensure that meats are at the correct temperature.
  3. Keep your refrigerator below 40 degrees
  4. Don’t prepare food if you have been ill
  5. Especially be cautious when preparing food for children, pregnant women, those in poor health, and the elderly.

The Centers for Disease Control says each year approximately 3,000 people die from foodborne illnesses, so it is important to make sure you take the necessary precautions in the kitchen.
