The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating after a Chevy Volt caught fire during a crash test.

Motor Trend Magazine reports the group tested the vehicle in a crash test, and then three weeks later the vehicle caught on fire due to damage to the battery pack and coolant line.  The Huffington Post further describes that the battery “erupted” in fire at the test facility in Wisconsin, and the fire was severe enough to catch nearby vehicles on fire as well.

MSNBC reports in addition to the previous test, another crash-tested battery began smoking and sparking.

General Motors told MSNBC that they’re sure that the Volt is “safe” and “does not present undue risk…”

The NHTSA is continuing to investigate the crash safety of the vehicle.  So far, no fires have been reported by any of the more than 5,000 Volt owners on the roads.
