Organizers looking for university or hospital to partner with
FLUSHING -- Plans are in the works for a new senior wellness center in Flushing.
The multi-million dollar 'wellness campus' will take up several acres just east of the Genesee County Park.
"People want ease of access and they want things within their community, so that's the whole purpose of this," said Karen Popovits, executive director of the Flushing Area Senior Center.
Popovits says Flushing is the ideal place to build the sprawling center, because the town has the largest aging population per capita in the entire Midwestern United States.
Forty eight percent of Flushing residents are age 45 or older.
"It goes beyond just building an appropriate senior center that'll meet the needs," adds Popovits, who says planners are looking to partner with a local university or hospital.
"There are just unbelievable amounts of opportunities and I read about that a little bit, and I think it would be fantastic where they're all together," says 63-year-old David Walworth, who currently uses the Flushing Area Senior Center.
The master plans for the campus will be unveiled during a kick-off fair on March 19th.
