Legislation approved by Michigan Senate

LANSING -- Certain teens behind the wheel could be barred from using cell phones while driving under legislation approved by the Michigan Senate.

A bill that would ban cell phone use has been approved by the Senate.

The measure now advances to the House.

Supporters of the bill say it aims to cut down on distracting driving among young teens. Some lawmakers who voted against the measure say it doesn't go far enough to crack down on all reasons for distracting driving.

The bill would ban cell phone use for those with Level 1 or 2 graduated drivers' licenses. The measure in general would apply to drivers younger than 17, at which point drivers often begin applying for Level 3 licenses.

Level 1 and 2 drivers' licenses already have restrictions, including limitations on nighttime driving.
