LANSING (AP) -- Have robe, will travel.

Michigan lawmakers have approved a bill that allows some judges to travel outside their home turf to perform marriages without first getting permission.

Under current law, the State Court Administrative Office must sign off on judges handling a marriage away from their usual jurisdiction. Supporters of the bill say it can be inconvenient, especially when someone wants to get married at Mackinac Island or a beach and knows a judge from home.

The bill is on the desk of Gov. Rick Snyder. The legislation affects Probate Court judges, District Court judges and magistrates.
