Governor expected to sign bill later this week
FLINT -- Michigan Governor Rick Snyder applauded the state legislature for passing Dominick's Law, which will make the state's child abuse laws some of the toughest in the nation.
Gov. Snyder is expected to sign the bill this week.
He was in Flint Monday afternoon to talk with local business, religious and political leaders about a new urban initiatives effort in the city.
Governor Snyder sat down for a one-on-one interview following his meeting, and touched on Dominick's Law.
"We've done a lot for children through child services. A lot of the credit should go to (Dept. of Human Services Director) Maura Corrigan," Gov. Snyder said.
Dominick Calhoun was beaten and killed by his mother's boyfriend, Brandon Hayes, in Genesee County's Argentine Township in April 2010.
Hayes was sentenced to two life sentences in late February.
The new law stiffens penalties for people convicted of first or second degree child abuse.
It is also now a crime to commit child abuse in front of another child, or to witness child abuse and not tell authorities.
