Are cameras on stop signs a good idea?

Washington DC is following the lead of California where photo enforced stop signs have been raking in the dough.

The cameras in Santa Monica Hills in California were placed in 2007 and people who were fined $100 brought in two million dollars of revenue last year.

Now DC is gearing up to install 16 stop sign cameras by the end of the year, mostly at intersections near schools.

Run through one and it will cost you $50.

Some drivers aren't happy.

"Give us a break, stop sign cameras that's out of the question," said one motorist.  "I don't think they should be putting them on stop signs now, I think that's a little too much."

Last year, DC's red light and speed limit cameras raked in $55 million.  City officials insist it's not about the revenue but about safety.

We're asking Facebook fans this morning if this stop sign camera initiative will help keep the roadways safer? Do you think something like this would ever work in Michigan?
