FLINT -- About 50 Flint residents got a lesson in crime prevention Tuesday night in a workshop designed to encourage civilians to help make their neighborhoods safer.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) was the first of a two-part workshop offered through the Flint Police Department’s Blue Badge program and the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice, in recognition of Crime Prevention Month.

Officer Brian Kanicki from the Saginaw Township Police Department led the workshop.  He talked about how people can look for small improvements on their streets to ensure safety.

That can be as simple as trimming the shrubs outside homes, replacing the light bulbs on the porch or putting in new locks.

“It's not about making a citizens police force out there,” Officer Kanicki said, “but it's about educating our residents out there how to take some small steps, take that ounce of prevention to hopefully have that pound of cure to prevent them from becoming victimized of crime in our community."

The next workshop is Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Flint YWCA from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  The course is made free by a grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation.

Anyone interested can contact Officer Tanya Meeks of the Flint Police Department at 810-237-6929 or by email at tmeeks@cityofflint.com.
