FLINT (AP) -- Police in Flint are investigating the slaying of a 92-year-old World War II veteran who was gunned down after answering an afternoon knock at a door of his home.

Iris Gardner died after being shot once Tuesday by someone who fled. Police haven't released any suspect information.

Flint police Capt. T.P. Johnson says Gardner was "no threat to anyone." Johnson says it appears to be a "random act of violence that did not have any rhyme or reason to it."

Fifty-five-year-old Joann Cooper says her family is shocked by the circumstances of her uncle's death. He'd lived for decades in Flint and formerly was a supervisor at a junkyard.

Police are taking tips from the public in the case.
