TRAVERSE CITY -- There are smiles on everyone's faces and the atmosphere is second to none. The athletes are getting under way Wednesday with time trials in their events including a number of athletes from Area 22.

Area 22 is represented by a total of 12 athletes from Shiawassee and Saginaw counties.

One of the athletes competing from Saginaw is Matthew Bronz. His mom, Trish, just happens to be his coach. At 23, years old Matthew is competing in his first winter games.

Before his time trial, his mom and coach helped him get ready and then it was off to the races. Matthew did very well and he has his mom to thank for getting him involved.

"Mom said Matthew why don't we try snow shoeing, I think you would like that,” says Trish Bronz.

“It took him a couple of years to walk in them and now he's running in them and he likes it,” she adds.

"Snow shoeing is lots of fun, I like it,” says Matthew.

Matthew is also an honorary member of the Saginaw township police department. His mom convinced a Grand Traverse sheriff’s deputy to come and cheer Matthew on.
