DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Quintin Berry was named the Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters’ Association.
Berry batted .258 (75x291) with 10 doubles, six triples, two home runs, 29 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 94 games with the Tigers. He finished second among American League rookies with six triples, while he was tied for second with 21 stolen bases, fourth with 44 runs scored and fifth with 75 hits.
He made his major league debut with the Tigers on May 23 and went on to hit safely in each of his first six games, becoming the first Tigers player since at least 1918 to hit safely in six consecutive games to begin a career. Berry also made history in his playoff debut, collecting two hits and a stolen base in Game One of the American League Division Series on October 6 at Comerica Park against the Oakland Athletics. He became the first Tigers player with at least two hits and a stolen base in a post-season debut since Matty McIntyre did so in Game One of the World Series on October 10, 1908 at Bennett Park against the Chicago Cubs.
Berry will be presented with his award prior to a Tigers home game during the 2013 season. The Detroit Sports Broadcasters’ Association has been selecting a Tigers Rookie of the Year since 1969.
