The icy roads may have claimed the life of a driver in Genesee County. The accident happened Tuesday morning on Grand Blanc Road, just east of Van Vleet Road. Police say the driver apparently lost control and the vehicle flipped into a tree. The name of the driver has not been released.
Michigan State Police are warning drivers that roads all over the area are slick and drivers should use caution. For a complete list of road conditions, visit the MSP website.
If you must head out of the roads use the following driving safety tips:
- Slow down. In slick conditions it will take longer for you to stop a vehicle, and for a vehicle to respond. A lower rate of speed can help you safely maneuver.
- Brake gently. Remember that sudden and quick changes on slick surfaces can cause you to loose control. When breaking, break gently and if your wheel starts to lock up, ease off the brake.
- Make yourself seen. While being able to see is important when driving, being seen by other drivers is just as important. Make sure that your lights are not covered by snow and turn them on when driving.
- 4-wheel drive doesn’t mean invulnerable. Any vehicle can be susceptible to slipping and sliding, it’s best to proceed with caution no matter what you’re driving.
While most Michigan residents are accustomed to driving in snow and icy conditions, you can’t always avoid the unexpected, so it’s best to be prepared. Having a roadside emergency kit in your car is one of the best ways.
