MUNISING, MI. (AP) -- A proposal to designate 11,739 acres of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore as wilderness won't make it through Congress this year. Michigan Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow sponsored legislation to establish the Beaver Basin Wilderness.

It's part of a broader public lands bill that was blocked by lawmakers from Western states.

The measure calls for expanding or creating a number of wilderness areas. Levin says he will introduce his bill again next year.

Pictured Rocks officials have been working on the Beaver Basin wilderness designation for many years.

Pictured Rocks is located in the north-central Upper Peninsulaalong Lake Superior.
