NEW YORK -- Tonight hundreds of thousands of people are expected to pack New York City to see the ball drop in Times Square. NBC's Peisze Cheng reports what the city is doing to make sure everyone stays safe.
The N.Y.P.D. set up police barriers along Seventh Ave. in anticipation of the huge crowds that will flood Times Square for the main attraction.
Up to a million people are expected to brave the crowds and the cold. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, I'll probably never be able to do this again," stated Rachel Oliff from Georgia.
While hundreds of thousands will flock to New York for fun, the N.Y.P.D. will be busy securing Times Square.
At a police graduation, commissioner Ray Kelly said security will be tight, with security cameras and both uniformed and plain clothed officers sprinkled throughout the crowd. "We'll have our counter-terrorism overlay. We'll have our helicopters, subways will be covered with additional officers," Commissioner Kelly commented.
But unlike other years, tomorrow will pose specific sercuty challanges as former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton will join Mayor Bloomberg to push the ceremonial button to signal the lowering of the New Years Eve Ball. "Times Square is so secure, it's the last thing you have to worry about," Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated.
If you're thinking of coming to NYC this year, be sure to leave the car at home. Starting at 3:30, several streets will be closed.
Though it should be fun, as Joseph Glasser, a New York City resident stated, "It's going to be too crowded."
