LANSING (AP) -- Michigan's attorney general says if General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC file for bankruptcy protection, they should do it in Michigan.

Mike Cox on Wednesday wrote letters to the leaders of GM and Chrysler calling it "bizarre" to file for bankruptcy outside Michigan. He cited media speculation about possible bankruptcy filings in New York or Delaware.

Cox said filing outside Michigan would inconvenience and unfairly affect creditors in Michigan.

GM and Chrysler face government-imposed deadlines to restructure.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday criticized banks for what she said appears to be an attempt to force Chrysler into bankruptcy.

Granholm said she is writing letters to the heads of four banks who are Chrysler lenders.
