(AP) -- YPSILANTI, Mich. - Authorities say an Ypsilanti man faces charges after he beat a puppy with a tire iron, dumped it roadside and choked his girlfriend.

Police say 29-year-old Eric Rutley of Ypsilanti has been charged with felony animal torture, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder and manufacturing marijuana.

He is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Jail officials did not immediately know if Rutley has a lawyer.

The Michigan Humane Society tells WJBK-TV the Australian Shepherd named Brownie was found Thursday unable to walk. It had leg fractures and some of its teeth were knocked out. The dog's leg may need amputation.

Rutley is scheduled for a Sept. 8 preliminary exam in 6th Circuit Court in Ann Arbor.
