As burglaries increase, how to protect your home

The Lapeer County Sheriff is warning residents, the county has been dealing with a record number of burglaries in recent weeks.

“I’ve never seen burglaries at this rapid pace,” says Sheriff Ron Kalanquin.

In just the last week deputies responded to 20 burglaries.  That is more than three times as many as the county saw in an average week last year.

Sheriff Kalanquin has advice for residents.

He says as law enforcement agencies across the state see cuts in staff, folks need to take responsibility for their own safety, by watching out for their neighbors.

If you see a suspicious vehicle, write down the license plate number and report it.  If a suspicious person knocks on your door, report it. This is a common way for burglars to find out if you are home.  In several recent break-ins neighbors afterward reported such activities, but they did not report them at the time.

When you aren’t at home, don’t make it obvious.  Close your garage door, and leave a light or television on a timer.

A security alarm system is a good idea, but even if you don’t have an alarm system, a sign that says you do may deter burglars.

Lastly, consider joining a neighborhood watch or community policing group. Many local law enforcement agencies can help you do so.
