Just 17-days into the year, 93-year-old World War II veteran Marvin Schur was found frozen in his Bay City home.
The city utility company shut off his service because of unpaid bills. Evidence shows Schur had the money to pay his bills but was confused about where to pay.
The story sparked national attention.
Keven Novellino, Bay City Commissioner says, "I don't think we should be laying blame. What we should be doing as a community is learning from this."
Because of the tragedy, Michigan law now bans utility companies from shutting off services in the coldest times of the year.
Two months later, on March 22nd, police respond to a Bay City home because of a fight.
Inside, police say 15-year-old Brett Elder was acting out of control and took a fighting-stance against them.
Police used a taser on him.
Shortly after, witnesses say elder began throwing up. He died at Bay Regional Medical Center.
Elder's friend, Jessica Gregory says "They could not have taken anything more away from us."
August 8th, on the 50th anniversary of the only Michigan PGA Tour event, General Motors and the PGA announce the end of the Buick Open at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc Township.
Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau director, Jerry Preston says, "They've been a great sponsor. In no way are we wanting to beat up on Buick and the wonderful sponsorship they provided all these years, but we think it makes more sense for them to invest their advertising dollars in the Buick Open because of the brand equity they've got with the Buick Open all these years."
A historic landmark now stands at the club while tourism officials try to bring in another tournament.
As the leaves began to change in the fall, General Motors made a series of exciting announcements for MidMichigan.
First, Bay City Powertrain would be manufacturing the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze connector rods and cam shafts.
Todd McDaniel, from UAW Local 362 says, "It is a very, very nice change of pace. I could definitely get used to it."
Then, Flint Truck Assembly recaptured production of the 1500 half ton light duty, crew cab, four door pickup.
UAW Local 598 Chairman Dana Rouse says, "They're the Cadillac of trucks, our Silverado and GMC Sierra is best in class for gas mileage in that segment."
Finally, GM announced production of the Volt and Cruze engines at several Genesee County factories.
On September 11th, while the nation remembered the terrorism attacks from 8-years ago, local terror struck Owosso.
33-year-old Harlan Drake shot and killed 63-year-old pro-life advocate James Pouillon who was holding a sign across the street from Owosso High School.
Drake then went to Fouss Gravel Company and shot and killed the company's president Mike Fouss.
Drake has been found competent to stand trial for the murders.
2009 put MidMichigan in the national spotlight several times pushing several issues to the forefront.
It's another year, and another chapter in MidMichigan's history.
