State Senate pass smoking ban bill

A new bill aims to put an end to people lighting up cigarettes in public places.

The state senate passed an anti smoking ban Thursday with a 75 to 30 vote.

The ban applies to the workplace, all restaurants and bars, so after the bill takes affect a person would have to step outside to smoke.

The Smoke Free Air law doesn't apply to casinos, or smoke shops. Daniel Wayne Simpson Sr. said this new law favors non-smokers. "They got none smoking places. You go to a restaurant and a none smoker goes into a smoking place because there are no seats in their area and sits down and complain, but a smoker can't go in a none smoking area and smoke because there's no seats in their area," said Simpson.

Opponents of this new law said it's a sign of too much government control. "I'm not in favor of the government dictating or infringing on my rights. I'm not a smoker per say but they take away those rights and what's next," said Kevin Kogot.

While others like Pat Scholl said she looks forward to enjoying clean air. "You know what if they ban it, it wouldn't bother me. If I want a cigarette I'll go outside or else just quit; which would be better," said Scholl.

The statewide ban should officially kick in May 2010 after Governor Granholm sign's the bill.

Michigan will then become the 38th state with smoking restrictions.
