(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to vastly increase the ability of big business and unions to sway elections was a moment of triumph for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, which was involved in one of the cases the court reversed.
The Chamber wanted to buy a quarter-page newspaper ad in The Grand Rapids Press supporting the Republican candidate in a 1985 special election for a state House seat. The Michigan Secretary of State said the ad violated state law.
The case eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld Michigan's law. But the high court overturned that 1990 decision on Thursday.
Rich Robinson of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network says the ruling won't have much effect on Michigan campaigns since corporations already have figured out ways to run political ads.
