BAY CITY -- Three people in Michigan are dead because of icy roads and officials are warning that driving conditions might still be rough.

The snow may be mostly over for today, but it could still be a driving nightmare for travelers in Mid-Michigan.

While the roads appear to be safe, the Bay City Police Department said there are some precautions drivers should still take.

"Yes there still are a lot of slippery spots out there even though the roads appear to be clear, you're still going to run into icy roads,” said Sergeant Will Badour.

Bay City Police responded to 86 accidents total within the last 24 hours, several crashes and vehicles sliding off the road as dangerous road conditions slowed traffic this morning.

"First of all you got to realize that you can't drive the same as you would if the streets are dry, you have to use caution," said Badour.

Here are a few tips to keep safe:

  • Know your route and keep up with weather conditions here on nbc25 and our website connectmidmichigan.com.
  • Next, always have a winter travel safety kit in your car filled with flashlights, extra warm clothes, batteries and bottled water.
  • Lastly slow down, a good rule of thumb is to reduce your speed by 50 percent in snowy conditions.

"It's also a good idea to always have your cell phone, a pair of gloves, a hat in the car, and blanket, if you do get stuck in the snow turn your hazards on if there’s no where near you can go for safety,” said Badour.

The department told NBC25 News, the smartest thing to do if you go off the road is to stay in your car and dial 911.

Forecasters expect more snow to continue next week, officers say it's important to keep your eyes on the road and drive carefully, especially around other vehicles.

"You need to keep a large amount of space between you and the driver ahead of you incase you get a spill of heavy snow you need to be able to react give yourself enough time and space to react," said Badour.

Bay City Police are also asking drivers allow enough time for travel and use extra caution while on the road.
