(AP) -- U.S. Sen. Carl Levin is set to testify before a congressional subcommittee on the subject of small businesses. The Detroit Democrat is scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in Washington before the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Economic Policy.

The hearing is entitled "Restoring Credit to Main Street: Proposals to Fix Small Business Borrowing and Lending Problems." It is to examine solutions proposed by the administration of President Barack Obama and Congress to increase the level of lending, which has declined in recent years.

Levin plans to discuss the importance of ensuring that small businesses have access to the credit they need to stay afloat.

Levin sits on the Senate Small Business Committee.
