Michigan State Police say scammers, posing as the U.S. Census, are calling Mid-Michigan residents, asking for personal information.
Monday, the Gaylord Post received a phone call referencing the 2010 Census. The phone call was a recording which stated the following:
“2010 Census is here- Diabetics- Please notice that there is not a spot on your form asking about your status- but insurance carriers need this information to determine what they will cover – diabetics experts has created a short, voluntary survey to gather this needed information – so if you’re a diabetic and want to make sure your coverage does not change, please press 1 now to take part – even if you know someone who is diabetic and want them counted please press 1 or press 2 to decline.”
The scam is intended to obtain personal information which could be used for identity theft. If local residents receive this call or a similar call, they are advised to hand up the phone. Do not provide any personal information over the phone.
The Census Bureau has been contacted regarding this scam.
