From small town politics, to one of the state's highest positions, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has been endorsed by state democrats for Michigan's next attorney general.
He was endorsed over the weekend, beating out a heavily-funded and well-organized opponent.
Leyton says, "I felt that we were connecting with voters all over Michigan." That's the reason he says why he's been endorsed as the democratic nominee for attorney general.
He was the underdog in a democratic race with Richard Berstein, son of arguably the most recognized lawyer in Michigan, Sam Berstein.
Leyton says, many people encouraged him to run for attorney general. He thinks it's a good fit.
"Here we help people in one county. As attorney general, I can help people in 83 counties," Leyton says.
Leyton and Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell are good friends and work well together.
They were called the "Dream Team" when they ran for their respective positions.
Speaking of Pickell, Leyton says, "While he's happy for me, he will certainly miss me. I'll miss him. I've encouraged him to come along for the ride, but he's happy here being county sheriff."
Leyton beat Berstein by a 52% to 47% margin.
While the endorsement doesn't guarantee he'll be the nominee, it solidifies his candidacy when democrats officially select a nominee in August.
On the republican side, former appeals court judge Bill Schuette and senate majority leader Mike Bishop are seeking the nomination.
