(AP) -- A former state lawmaker under indictment in a federal bribery case has filed to run for a state Senate seat. Detroit Democrat Mary Waters filed paperwork late Tuesday to run in the August primary for the state's 1st District. Waters is a former member of the state House. She ran against U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick for a seat in Congress in 2008 but lost in the Democratic primary.

A message was left for Waters by The Associated Press. Waters told The Detroit News for a story Tuesday that running represents an opportunity to return to public service. She said she hasn't been convicted of anything.

Waters and her former companion, Detroit political consultant Sam Riddle, are co-defendants in a bribery case in federal court. Trial starts June 1.
