MILLINGTON TOWNSHIP -- “I’ve lived here my whole life and I love it here. I’m just plain tired of this,” said a tearful Wanda Metro of Millington Township, of the sewage seeping onto her property, not far from Millington Creek.
Thursday’s rain storms dumped more than two inches of rain into the community’s storm water system, overpowering a nearby pump, according to Tuscola County Registered Sanitarian Jerry White.
That has sent waste elements up to Metro’s property, creating health concerns.
“There are all kinds of yucky things over there on the road and it’s coming on my yard and I’m kinda tired of it,” she said.
Metro said she has been unsuccessfully fighting the issue for twelve years. She showed NBC25 letters between her and officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (formerly the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality).
White said the township government has a plan with the state to deal with the matter, involving the construction of a second pumping station. However, project bids are still ongoing.
Metro hopes something is done soon, and is considering hiring an attorney. "I mean business. I mean real business this time."
