Cats rescued from filthy home are up for adoption

A Saginaw community is disgusted after finding something unusual in one of the neighborhood's foreclosed homes.

"There were about 30 cats in distress living in this house all by themselves," said Pet Angel Adoption and Rescue Volunteer, Shellie Nalevayko.

Nalevayko said she received a phone call from a friend informing her of the vacant home, so she and her team headed out to rescue the abandoned cats. She said she's uncertain of the exact time period the cats have been living in these conditions, but she said it has definitely been a period of several months.

"When we did go in, the conditions were deplorable. There's probably 3 to 4 inches of feces all over...there were cats laying all over in their own waste," she said.

The former tenant and cat owner could not be reached for comment; however, Nalevayko said many personal items remain in the home.

"None of her stuff was taken. You can see where purses are hanging up in there--and makeup sitting in the bathroom," she said.

So far, the volunteers have rescued over 20 cats, and are hoping to find the last that remain. The adoption agency said the cats have been examined by the local vet and are in healthy condition.

"Come out and pick one out because they need T.L.C., they need patience, they need love, they need combing in a lot of cases, but they are sweet cats," Nalevayko said.

Many of the cats are purebred Himalayan Persians. If you are interested in adopting one of the animals, an online adoption form can be downloaded at petangel.petfinder.com, or contact Pet Angel Adoption and Rescue at 989-652-0552.
