GENESEE COUNTY -- The man accused of torturing and murdering 4-year old Dominick Calhoun will head to trial.

The Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry found Brandon Hayes competent to stand trial.

The defense attorney has asked for an independent evaluation.

Hayes faces first degree torture and murder charges.

The boy's mother, Corrine Baker, is also continuing competency examinations and is expected to be back in court later this month.

In the meantime, Dominick's family is thanking the community for helping collect more than 1000 stuffed animals over the weekend.

Volunteers collected toys around Genesee County in honor of the 4-year old and his older brother who survived the terror.

The stuffed animals will be given to children who are victims of domestic violence and other crimes.
