What started with one woman’s desire to feed those in need is now a full blown mission making a difference on Flint’s eastside.
“It really touches my heart,” says volunteer Mary Sain. “I'm broken hearted for them. There is such a need.”
In April 2009 she and a few fellow everyday heroes decided to make meals and pass them out at Montana and Franklin on Tuesday evenings. Word quickly spread, and the hungry soon lined up regularly.
“I just want to tell these people thank you. Thank you,” says a woman who will only say her name is Peggy.
Peggy cannot hold back the tears as she waits with friends for the much needed meal.
“Its people like this that give us the help we need. Thank you and God bless you,” she says.
The volunteers got involved because they work together, worship together, or are friends. They call their charity ‘Feeding the 5,000’.
On Tuesday, June 15, 2010 they reached a landmark. They served Rachel Hogle, a mother of three struggling to scrape by, their 5,000th meal. They celebrated by then giving her a bible, cross, devotional journal, and a $50 gift card to Kroger.
Hogle says she doesn’t come out every Tuesday, only when desperate to make sure her children don’t go to bed hungry.
“Sometimes we need it, so we come up here,” says Hogle with visible gratitude. “These people are the greatest.”
Volunteers say they will continue to feed the hungry. It is their way of serving not only the community, but God.
